Multispecies Sculptures for Urban Wildlife
by Andrea Macruz
these little layered sculptures were designed to promote symbiotic spaces that foster empathic relationships with nonhumans in urban centers. Made from cold ceramic, they attract and support small animals—including snails, worms, ants, beetles, and birds—by offering protection from the sun, rain, and wind, while providing shelter and habitat opportunities through their various shapes and layers. They can be used on balconies, building terraces, urban public gardens, beaches, and other locations. They were created using a 3D-printed bioplastic mold, which is then finished with cold ceramic. The mold allows for the creation of complex shapes and new enrichment options based on animal behavior, and it is removed afterward. While the mold design process was digital, the sculptures were crafted by hand, layer by layer. This dialogue between digital and handmade elements allows technology to reinterpret tradition, adding an innovative dimension to craftsmanship. As a result, the final pieces are not confined by their molds; instead, the finishing and layering process enables the creation of entirely new forms.
